Chocolate Dimply Plum Cake

Prunus Domestica

Prunus Domestica are the most produced fruit in Serbia. Probably because of Šljivovica :) But I never liked them and was a little stuck with these plums from my relative’s farm. There is actualy one food that I like plums in and those are Serbian potato dumplings with plums, but my grandmother never wrote down her recipe and after she passed away I never tasted dumplings good enough for me to make them again. So, why not make Dorie Greenspan’s Dimply plum cake? After all, I might be the only food blogger that hasn’t tried it yet ;) Well, just not to bore everyone again, I made it with chocolate. It turned out wonderful. The batter reminds of a cake my mother makes all the time with sour cherries.

I am sending this to Meeta for her Monthly Mingle August 2008: Fruit & Chocolate.

100 g dark chocolate
2 large eggs

Whisk the flour and baking powder together.

Melt chocolate and butter in a double boiler.

With a mixer beat eggs and sugar for about 3 minutes. Add lemon zest, then chocolate and then oil, beating for 1 minute after each addition.

Reduce the mixer speed to low and add the dry ingredients.

Scrape the batter into the 36×25 cm pan and smooth the top. Arrange the plums cut side up in the batter.

Bake in a preheated oven on 180°C for about 30 minutes or until it’s done.

Beautiful cake! I love it that you added chocolate element to it. Yum! And hey, I wish I had access to those great looking purple plums here! They do sell them here too, but sweet ones. I can’t find fresh sour plums here! Are yours sour? If so, please don’t let Elmo finish them up. Send some my way:) And please tell Elmo that I love his name:)

  • Colloquial Cook August 27, 2008 11:26 am

Wow, in French we call those plums “quetsches”, and the wood of the tree is fab to use in instrument making or any wood carving, it has pink stripes in the wood, it’s gorgeous! Almost as gorgeous as your chocolate and plum cakes!!

  • Dee August 28, 2008 5:02 am

It was a toss up between the dimply plum cake and Orangette’s almond plum and I chose the latter. But my plums sank. I’m not sure why? Yours are gorgeous. I love that you added chocolate to it, too.

  • Marija August 28, 2008 5:10 am

Hmmm, Dee, maybe you used too small baking pan and your already tall batter “swallowed” the plums when it rose? When I poured my batter, it was really thin.

  • Maya August 28, 2008 5:51 am

Elmo is adorable!!!My plum cake is in my draft folder, waiting to be published :) I like the chocolate version.

  • Maggie August 28, 2008 5:59 pm

Wonderful looking cake! My uncle is notorious for breaking out the Slivovitz at family functions. My family makes the potato dumplings. I just had a post about them this week, Szilvas gomboc.

  • Marija August 28, 2008 6:14 pm

Actually, after writing this post, I spoke to my aunt about the dumplings. She called me yesterday to tell me that she found a recipe in her notebook that she thinks is grandma’s. Can’t wait to try them out :)
