Cuba Libre

Cuba Libre

All inclusive, a hammock and a palm. Muscle bound Caribbean guy bringing a cocktail with a smile. There is a slice of lime and an umbrella hanging from the rim of my glass…

Story of one of the world’s most famous cocktails is still a lot less romantic than a story about chilling on a Cuban sand. Somewhere around 1900. in just liberated Havana, a cocktail was born, prosaically called Free Cuba!, which was actually a battle cry of the Cuban soldiers during the Spanish-American war. One of the versions says that an American soldiers ordered Bacardi with Coca Cola and a slice of lime, the guests of a bar loved it and continued to drink it through the night cheering Cuba Libre!

But no mater how popular cocktail Cuba Libre is today, all my memories are of it’s modest cousin Rum and Cola. I remember my father drinking it with his friends all the time. There was always some dark rum in the house, made in YU and of curse the cheapest one, I had no idea light rum existed until I got older.

Cuba Libre, ingredients

At the time of it’s creation, the original cocktail had a slightly different taste than we are used to it now. Historians claim that it used to be a bit more bitter due to the fact Coca Cola was still made with cocaine. Experts suggest you should pour a splash of some bitter liqueur (Jägermeister for example) so the taste would be more authentic.
